Why Knot Choice Matters More Than You’d Think

Not all knots are interchangeable. 1. Square Knot (Reef Knot)

The square knot is one of the oldest knots in recorded history — it appears in Egyptian artifacts and ancient Greek texts. It joins two ends of the same rope (or two ropes of equal thickness) to tie something closed.

Steps:

  1. Hold one end in each hand.
  2. Cross the right end over the left and tuck it underneath — like the first step of tying a shoe.
  3. Now cross the left end over the right and tuck it underneath.
  4. Pull both ends snug.

Memory trick: Right over left, left over right — it makes a square knot tight.

Important warning: The square knot is not a bend for joining two ropes under load. It can capsize (flip into a dangerous slipped form) when the ropes are different thicknesses or under uneven tension. Use it for light binding only.


2. Bowline

Best for: Creating a fixed loop at the end of a rope — rescue, mooring, rigging

The bowline (pronounced BOH-lin by sailors) is sometimes called the “king of knots” because it creates a secure, non-slipping loop that’s also relatively easy to untie even after heavy loading. It’s a core skill in sailing, climbing, and search-and-rescue.

Steps:

  1. Make a small loop in the standing part of the rope, with the working end on top.
  2. Pass the working end up through the loop (“the rabbit comes out of the hole”).
  3. Wrap the working end around the back of the standing part (“around the tree”).
  4. Pass the working end back down through the small loop (“back into the hole”).
  5. Pull the standing part and the working end in opposite directions to tighten.

Leave at least 6 inches of tail and add a stopper or safety knot if this will be load-bearing in a critical application like climbing.


3. Clove Hitch

Best for: Attaching a rope to a post, rail, or tree quickly

The clove hitch is fast to tie and adjust, making it popular in sailing (belaying lines to cleats temporarily) and camping (starting and finishing lashings). Its weakness is that it can slip if the load direction changes frequently, so it’s best for temporary attachments or as a component of more complex lashings.

Steps:

  1. Pass the rope over the post and cross the working end over the standing part.
  2. Take a second turn around the post.
  3. Tuck the working end under the second turn (the crossing wrap you just made).
  4. Pull tight.

Alternatively, if you can access the top of a post, form two loops in the same direction with your hands, stack them, and drop them over the post.


4. Figure-Eight Knot (Stopper)

Best for: Preventing a rope from running through a belay device, pulley, or block

This is the standard stopper knot in climbing and sailing. It’s bulkier than a simple overhand knot (so it jams more reliably) and — critically — it can be untied after heavy loading, unlike the overhand, which often needs to be cut.

Steps:

  1. Make a loop in the rope.
  2. Pass the working end once around the standing part.
  3. Thread the working end back through the original loop.
  4. Tighten so the knot forms a figure-eight shape.

5. Figure-Eight Follow-Through (Loop)

Best for: Tying a loop around a harness, anchor, or fixed object in climbing

This is the knot climbers use to tie their rope directly to a harness — it’s taught in virtually every beginner climbing course. It’s a figure-eight that you tie around an object by threading back through.

Steps:

  1. Tie a loose figure-eight about 18 inches from the end of the rope.
  2. Pass the working end through or around the object (harness tie-in points, anchor).
  3. Follow the path of the original figure-eight back through itself, in reverse.
  4. The finished knot should be a symmetrical double figure-eight. A “dressy” parallel knot with no crossing strands is the goal.
  5. Leave a tail of at least 6 inches and finish with a stopper knot (overhand) on the tail.

This knot is essential, and worth practicing until you can tie it correctly in the dark or with cold hands.


6. Sheet Bend

Best for: Joining two ropes of different diameters

The square knot fails with unequal ropes. The sheet bend doesn’t. It’s a simple but clever knot that’s been used by sailors for centuries to attach lines of different thicknesses.

Steps:

  1. Make a bight (a U-shaped bend) in the thicker rope.
  2. Pass the working end of the thinner rope up through the bight.
  3. Wrap the thin rope around the back of the bight (behind both legs of the U).
  4. Tuck the thin rope under its own standing part.
  5. Pull both ropes tight.

Double Sheet Bend: For very slippery ropes or high loads, take an extra turn around the bight before tucking. This is called the double sheet bend and holds significantly better.


7. Cleat Hitch

Best for: Securing a boat line to a cleat on a dock or boat

If you spend any time around boats, this is non-negotiable. The cleat hitch is the correct way to tie off to a standard horn cleat — it holds firmly, can be released quickly under load, and doesn’t jam. People who don’t know it tend to build up a dangerous and ineffective bird’s nest of wraps.

Steps:

  1. Lead the line around the base of the cleat (the post closest to the load) and take a full turn around.
  2. Take a figure-eight pass over the two horns of the cleat — over one horn, under the other, over that, under the first.
  3. Finish with a locking hitch: make a loop in the line with the working side underneath, and drop it over the last horn.
  4. Snug everything tight.

One complete figure-eight with a locking hitch is sufficient. More wraps than that make it harder to release when needed.


8. Prusik Hitch

Best for: Ascending a rope, adding a friction-based safety backup in climbing

The Prusik is a friction hitch — it slides freely when unweighted but locks tight under load. Climbers use it as a progress-capture device or to ascend a fixed line. It requires a Prusik loop (a short loop of thinner cord) and a main rope.

Steps:

  1. Pass the Prusik loop around the main rope.
  2. Thread the loop through itself twice (some sources say three times for thinner cord relative to the main rope).
  3. Make sure the coils lay parallel and don’t cross.
  4. Load the loop — it should lock immediately. Slide it upward when unweighted.

The Prusik is weight-ratio sensitive: the Prusik cord should be roughly 60–80% the diameter of the main rope to work correctly. Too thin and it bites too hard; too similar in diameter and it won’t grip reliably.


Practicing Until It Sticks

Reading about knots and actually knowing them are very different things. A few methods accelerate learning:

Practice with purpose. Tie each knot 10 times without looking at instructions, then 10 times with eyes closed. This sounds excessive until you’re cold, tired, and need to tie a bowline at 2 a.m. on a dark boat.

Keep a practice rope handy. A short length of 8–10mm rope by your desk or on the sofa lets you drill during otherwise idle moments. Paracord works fine for practice but behaves differently than thicker ropes, so transfer to the real thing.

Learn the failure modes. For each knot you plan to rely on, deliberately test how it fails. A square knot that capsizes, a clove hitch that slips — seeing failure under controlled conditions is far more instructive than just seeing success.
