How to Change Guitar Strings Step by Step

Changing your own guitar strings is one of those skills that pays for itself within the first hour you learn it. Step 4 — Insert and seat the new string
Drop the ball end into the bridge hole so the ball sits flat. Press the bridge pin in while pulling the string up and back — you should feel it click into a stable position. Give the string a gentle tug; if the pin pops, reseat it with the groove in the pin facing toward the neck.
Step 5 — Thread the tuning post
Run the string up the neck and thread it through the tuning post hole, leaving roughly 2–3 inches of slack beyond the post. That slack becomes the winds around the peg: too little and you get one messy half-wrap; too much and you end up with a chaotic coil that slips.
For wound strings (the three bass strings on a standard set), bend the string at the post so the first wrap goes under the slack end, then subsequent wraps go over it, locking the string in. Plain strings (the high E and B) don’t require the lock — three or four even winds going downward is enough.
Step 6 — Tune and stretch
Bring the string up to pitch. Then grip it between the 5th and 12th fret and pull it gently away from the fretboard — about half an inch. Retune. Repeat three or four times per string. Classical guitars have no bridge pins and a different headstock — typically a slotted peg head with rollers.
At the bridge
Classical strings tie at the bridge with a knot. Thread the string through the bridge hole from the soundhole side, leave about 3 cm of tail, loop the tail back under the string, and pass the short end through the loop you’ve formed (twice for the treble strings — the nylon slips more than wound strings). Pull snug. The knot sits on the back face of the bridge; the string runs over the bridge saddle.

Stretching nylon strings

Not leaving enough winding slack: A single wrap around a tuning post is a string waiting to slip. Aim for three to four even, descending wraps on an electric or acoustic.
Bridge pin popping out on acoustic: Almost always means the ball end is sitting on top of the pin rather than below it. Re-seat with the ball under the pin and the pin groove facing the neck.
Nylon treble strings slipping at the knot: Double the loop at the bridge, and make sure the short tail is locked under the knot. A tail that works free mid-performance is avoidable.

How Often Should You Change Strings?
